Quick Teach
How Many Skills Should I Teach?
Be sure to teach only one skill at a time. Less is more! It is much better to take one skill to mastery before introducing another skill.

How Long Will It Take To Teach?
When you have determined an appropriate time to introduce a skill, allow about 10 to 30 minutes to conduct a quick teach. The time you spend doing a quick teach will vary depending on the age and maturity level of your child. Don't try to cover it all in one session! It is much better to teach a skill over several short time periods. For example, you may want to begin by just discussing a skill and why it is important. At the next quick teach you can review and build on your earlier discussions, talk about when to use the skill and then introduce the steps.

How Could I Conduct A "Quick Teach?"

1. Tell your child what skill you are going to teach them.

2. Ask your child to repeat the skill.

3. Tell your child why this skill is important.

4. Ask your child to repeat in their own words why it is important.

5. Tell your child the steps for using the skill (Keep it to a few words like "look, say ok, and then do it right away").

6. Ask your child to repeat the steps.

7. Show your child what it looks like and sounds like when you use the steps.

8. Practice the steps together.

9. Ask your child to show you how to use the skill now and then remind and prompt your child to use the skill in other natural settings before they will need to use the skill.

10. Celebrate your child's success, praise their behavior and review as often as possible!
