Any ideas would be welcome.

Jennie Gibson introduced Christine Balderas, who does the Parent Center newsletter. She is assigned to eastern Utah and works with Salt Lake and Murray districts. Jennie encouraged people from the central area of the state to ask for workshops. They are also looking for parents to be on a state level advisory board. If anyone has someone in mind, let the UPC know. Parent conference is on April 28-29, 2000. Pre-registration will begin in January. A new parent handbook will be off the press next week on IDEA.

INSTITUTES OF HIGHER EDUCATION
University of Utah: Marshall Welch stated that they are re-instigating their undergraduate program next fall. The Department Advisory Committee (DAC) has been formed and will meet twice a year to help improve their programs. This is a means to reach out to the community and help them improve programs. Dave Sperry is the new Dean of the College of Education. General Education is being re-evaluated and working toward having a common core of knowledge for all teachers. Graduate school of education is sponsoring a week-long institute on reading starting June 19, 2000. Cecil Mercer will be the keynote speaker. Utah State has been working on a survey on teacher attrition and the results are helpful. University of Utah is in partnership with SIGNAL to use those results to help make decisions at the teacher education level. TEDD (Teacher Education Development Division of CEC) is working to involve people in this area. Next yearās conference will be in Las Vegas, so Utah educators will have an opportunity to input information.
